Westchester Healthy Start is a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation serving students at Westchester High School. Located on the high school campus, Westchester Healthy Start serves as a go-between for service providers offering counseling, tutoring and other services on the Westchester High School campus. Healthy Start serves students from all three schools on campus: Westchester High School, Westchester Math Science Aerospace High School and Del Rey Continuation High School.
Westchester High School Healthy Start began under the auspices of the State of California in 1997 with a Healthy Start Planning Grant, which was followed by a three-year Healthy Start Operational Grant.
In the summer of 2000, Healthy Start purchased a bungalow, which was moved onto campus to serve as its headquarters. The bungalow was purchased with Healthy Start funds and was designed specifically to accommodate individual and group counseling, meetings and offices.
Since exhausting Healthy Start support, the organization has continued with LEA grants through the State Medi-cal program and with a grant from the LA County Department of Probation.
Westchester Healthy Start incorporated on September 27, 2005, filing for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status as a public benefit corporation in August of 2006. The board of directors held its first annual meeting on August 21, 2006.
In school year 2005-06, Healthy Start served 256 individual high school students with programs aimed at improving behavior and academic achievement.
